Qualifications

  • The following are the qualifications required for the post of General Engineer:-
  • To qualify for General Engineer posts of the Department of Energy the applicant has to fulfill both the basic requirement and specific experience mentioned below:
  • Basic Requirement (Education): Please refer to the specific educational requirements mentioned in the job announcement.
  • Specialized Experience: The applicant must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. The specific requirements for each grade level are as follows:
  • GS-11: Experience in planning, developing and implementing, evaluating, and assisting in problem-solving components within assigned projects.
  • GS-12: Experience implementing engineering practices, conducting projects to improve operations, and providing recommendations for efficient coordination of projects.
  • GS-13: Experience in engineering research, studying and collecting data, interpreting designs, and evaluating technical data packages.
  • GS-14: Experience analyzing experimental principles and developments, developing strategies and goals for research and development, and preparing communications regarding research or projects.
  • GS-15: Experience in developing research plans, monitoring projects, providing high-level guidance, negotiating agreements with government agencies, evaluating technical issues, and making official recommendations.
  • Note: Education is not a substitute for specialized experience at the GS-12 to GS-15 levels.
  • “Experience” includes paid and unpaid work, volunteer service and community-based roles. Volunteer work can enhance your competencies, knowledge and skills and can be considered in your application.

Education

  • To fulfill the basic requirement, an engineering degree is necessary.
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a school accredited by ABET.
  • To include engineering science courses such as statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electric fields and circuits, nature and properties of materials, and other related areas

  • Applicants may qualify through a combination of education and experience, demonstrating:
  • A strong foundation in the physical and mathematical sciences related to engineering.
  • Practical understanding of engineering sciences and techniques, as well as their applications in a particular engineering branch.
  • Applicants may also qualify based on: Professional Registration or Licensure: Current registration as an engineer intern, licensure as an engineer in training in any state, District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
  • Written Examination: Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination or any other written examination required for professional registration by engineering licensing boards in various jurisdictions.
  • Specified Academic Coursework: Basic requirements require completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of coursework in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences as specified.
  • Related Courses: Graduate from a course leading to a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific field with at least 01 year of professional engineering experience under supervision.
  • Applicants must submit copies of college transcripts to verify their education. Failure to provide transcripts renders the application “disqualified”. Education must be obtained from an institution recognized by the US Department of Education. The Department for Education website is to be consulted for guidance on the assessment of overseas education.

Requirements Conditions of Employment

    • The applicant must have US citizenship.
